Joel Baglien & Jason McKinney

Jason McKinney began with High Monkey Consulting in 2007 and moved into the role of Collaborative Consultant after completing his business degree in Management Information Systems at the University of Northern Iowa.  Jason is High Monkey's 'go to guy' for SharePoint configurations, setups, workflows, and customizations.  Jason aggressively learns new technologies and expands his areas of expertise in SharePoint and other collaboration technologies.  His understanding of business issues and challenges regularly puts him on the front line with clients who need solid technology solutions that are both cost effective and intuitively easy to use.

Jason grew up in central Iowa working for a variety of family businesses, which fed his entrepreneurial view and enhanced his understanding of a wide range of industries.  Being from Iowa, a few fun things he enjoys are golfing, canoeing, and exploring the countryside.  Although it is often difficult to be on the leading-edge, Jason loves to adopt the latest and greatest tech gadgets, gizmos, and internet technologies. He always wants to be just one step ahead.

Joel Baglien is the Practice Manager for High Monkey Consulting. Joel has 25+ years of business and management experience. His first experience with web technologies happened in 1995 when he was tasked to, 'figure out a business model for the Internet' for a technology manufacturing company. In addition to running his own independent consulting practice for 8 years, Joel has managed web development teams, project teams, and managed projects for small and medium businesses and Fortune 500 companies.

Joel spent his formative years in the former American Canal Zone in Panama. It gave him a global perspective on people, business, politics, government, and the many oddities of the human experience. From mountain climbing to jungle motorcycling, it was quite a place to grow up. After high school, there was an interesting path from Georgia Tech to Auburn University, to the US Navy in Rhode Island, and finally to Minnesota. The Midwest feels like home most of the time. Co-parenting three teenagers is a good challenge for Joel and his wife Jodi. It's not exactly 'Zen-like' but most days things seem to go pretty well. Along the way, Joel has improved his sense of humor and developed a sense of irony. Go figure.

Taking the Government out of Governance

When you hear the word governance, one often thinks only about control...controlling the way we think, the way we work and what we can and cannot do. From an IT perspective, governance planning and implementation is a much needed piece to maintain control around a SharePoint collaborative environment. From an end-user perspective, governance is often perceived as excessive control and limitations. In this session we will explore how to plan out the controls, checks and balances we need to put in place while not forgetting that the main ingredient in any good system is the end user that wants to use it. We will look at how to plan, control and monitor the growth of our systems to ‘facilitate' the end user experience and increase the overall success of our SharePoint implementation.

Virgil Carroll

High Monkey Consulting began in 1997 when one technologically-gifted man envisioned a consulting company that would join business expertise and technological savvy–with a touch of humor thrown in for good measure. Virgil grew up as an Alaskan fisherman, so he knows that life, like business, can be smooth sailing one minute and stormy seas the next. His ability to stay calm and clear-headed through the storms of business has been a valuable asset to many companies and individuals throughout the years. After graduating from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks with a degree in Sports Medicine and then attaining a Masters in Instructional Design from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Virgil decided to put his myriad talents to good use and formed High Monkey Consulting.

MOSS/SharePoint, Like Cereal, Good Out-of-the-Box, Better with Add-On's

MOSS/SharePoint, like cereal, is great out-of-the-box.  But, also like cereal, MOSS/SharePoint can be enhanced with extras and add-ons.  One can do that through development tools like Visual Studio and SharePoint Designer.  And/or, one can enhance MOSS/SharePoint using commercial and community add-on tool sets.  In this session, Pete Hohenhaus provides an overview of the kinds of commercial and community add-ons available.  He will also present overviews and/or demos of select toolsets, both from commercial Microsoft Vendor Partners and community sites such as CodePlex.  Some examples include admin/reporting tools (Quest, Nintex, et al.), backup tools (Quest, AvePoint, CommVault, et al.), workflow tools (Nintex, et al.), and special purpose tools (e.g., List Roll-Up Web Parts).

Pete Hohenhaus

Pete Hohenhaus has spent 13 years consulting and systems engineering in the areas of SharePoint and business intelligence.  He currently is a senior consultant at Meritide, Inc., in the Twin Cities.  He consults on business uses of SharePoint, PerformancePoint, Reporting Services, and Analysis Services, with a particular focus on infrastructure issues.  Immediately prior to that, he spent 3 years as Tech Lead for MOSS/SharePoint and Reporting Services at SuperValu/Albertsons, creating and building out SuperValu's MOSS/SharePoint Server Farm systems and services, as well as the Reporting Services and related BI server farms and systems.  During his time at SuperValu/Albertsons, Pete was the founding user member of the joint Microsoft – Users Greater Idaho SharePoint Users Group.  He  introduced and deployed Analysis Services, ProClarity, and SharePoint at Capital One Auto Finance in San Diego as Data Delivery Team Lead, designed the SharePoint site organization for Micron's main chip fabrication facility, designed the Analysis Services cubes and ProClarity reporting structures for an early phase of the Idaho State Department of Education assessment project, etc.  Pete holds double BA's in economics and political science from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from St. Thomas, and taught applied managerial economics and information resource management classes at St. Thomas, as an adjunct instructor in the MBA program, from 1991 to 1996.  From 1975 through 1989, Pete was active in business merger, costing, demand, pricing, and forecasting activities at Union Pacific Railroad Company and U S WEST Communications (Qwest Communications).   From 1990 through 1994, Pete was an author, database designer, and search systems coordinator at West Publishing, now Thomson/West.

A Modular Approach to MOSS/SharePoint Server Farm Organization and Capacity Planning

Setting up a multi-server MOSS/SharePoint Server Farm, and different server roles, can be pretty modular.  Deciding how to manage/plan your servers, content databases, and the like, with a view to understanding organization, structure, and capacity, can be pretty modular, too.  In this session, Pete Hohenhaus provides an overview and some operations engineering ideas and perspectives on at least some ways to think and structure MOSS/SharePoint Server Farms.  Some ideas on initial planning and structuring of server farms will be presented, as will thoughts on content databases, load balancing, SQL Server, etc.  Along the way, experiences, both as to good planning practices and what we might do if, along the way, our existing SharePoint Farms' structures pose some problems.
