VOLUNTEER MENTORS CELEBRATED AT RECEPTION SPONSORED BY DARBY DENTAL

On Tuesday, April 8, Big Brothers Big Sister of Long Island (BBBSLI) celebrated their volunteer mentors (‘Bigs’) at the Volunteer Appreciation Reception, sponsored by Darby Dental. The reception was held at the Crest Hollow Country Club during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, highlighting over 25,000 cumulative hours of time and energy volunteers spent annually to positively impact the lives of children on Long Island.

“Thank you to Darby Dental for sponsoring the event,” said BBBSLI CEO, Mark Cox. “It was a big night for our volunteers. This reception celebrates our ‘Bigs’ who understand the importance of mentoring. They are living out our mission and are witnessing first-hand, how mentoring impacts children’s lives for the better.”

A highlight of the night was when volunteers were surprised with a performance by the Long Island Children’s Choir. The non-profit choral group helped to express BBBSLI’s gratitude to nearly 100 Big Brothers and Big Sisters in attendance.

During the evening’s program, all Big Brothers and Big Sisters were acknowledged for their volunteerism in mentoring children facing adversity. Also acknowledged at the reception were five high school and college ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ who received scholarships from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island and NBTY Helping Hands totaling over $35,000.

“We are very thankful for the support we have received from Run or Dye.  This event was an awesome experience for everyone involved,” BBBSLI CEO Mark Cox stated.  “Thank you to the volunteers that came.  This contribution helps us provide quality mentors to children we serve on Long Island.”

The Run or Dye 5K Run provided a creative way for BBBSLI to engage with the community and gain exposure.  Chosen as the Official Charity Partner, the organization had the opportunity to raise money and share its mission to a large audience.  Over 6,000 participants were at the event.

On Tuesday, March 11th, more than one-hundred guests participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island Poker Night sponsored by Steve Madden. The sold out event took place at Social Sports Kitchen in Uniondale and raised $21,000!

“Thank you to Steve Madden, our table sponsors and everyone who participated in this year’s Poker Night,” said BBBSLI Director of Development Jamison Skala. “Not only is this an exciting poker tournament, it is also one of the best networking events on Long Island. We are already receiving seat requests for our next poker tournament in July. Due to everyone’s generous support from this event, we are able to match more children with much-needed mentors right here on Long Island.”
